Lanarkshire Motorcycle Club History

The club was formed in 1933 as the Lanarkshire Motorcycle and Car Club, but the Car section did not become active until 1938. Club records show that, as well as social events, the main competitions were Scrambles (Motocross) and Trials.  In fact, it has been said that the Lanarkshire Club organised the first real Scramble (Motocross) held in Scotland, in 1935, just north of Airdrie.

In 1952 the club split into two, Lanarkshire Car Club and Lanarkshire Motorcycle Club.  The Lanarkshire Car Club was very active in the Car Rally scene in Scotland but closed in 2011.

Lanarkshire Motorcycle Club continued to organise both Scrambles and Trials until the early 70's when it decided to concentrate on Trials.  Around this time the Club membership had dropped to around 15 and it continued like this until the late 70's.  The Club then decided to specialise in organising Trials for both youth and adult riders and together with a regular newsletter, the Nark, and club trials, the membership quickly increased until by the early 80's it was well over 100. The club has organised rounds of both the adult and youth Scottish Trials Championships for many years and more recently the Classic Championship.

When the Scottish Motorcycle Show first started in the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow in 1977 Lanarkshire Motorcycle Club took a stand.  The show soon outgrew the McLellan Galleries and moved to the Kelvin Hall where again Lanarkshire Motorcycle Club had a stand and, together with the show organisers, put on the first indoor arena trial in Scotland.
